News: How to Clean Your Lace Wig While Showering

This question follows our previous one, "Can I Sleep in My Human Hair Lace Wig?" The answer is yes, you can. But how do you wash it while in the shower?

There may be times when you need to wear a human hair wig for several days during a business trip or vacation. You might not want to or have the time to put on your lace wig every morning, but you still want to keep your hair clean, so you may want to wash your lace wig while it's on your head.

However, it's important to be more cautious when washing your lace wig compared to your natural hair.

First, ensure that the adhesive—whether glue, tape, clips, or a combination—is still securely attached and that there are no loose areas, especially around the edges. If your hair wig is starting to come off, washing it while it's on your head is not advisable.

Second, consider the length of your natural hair. If your hair underneath the wig is only an inch or two long, it will dry quickly. However, if your natural hair is longer, it will take more time to dry properly under the hair wig.

Third, in the shower, tilt your head back and gently wet your hair. Always let the water flow down from the back of your head, as this is gentler on the bonds, particularly at the front. Standing directly under the shower can cause the water to loosen the lace wig.

Use a gentle shampoo specifically designed for wigs or a shampoo for delicate hair (a color-treated hair shampoo works well). You only need to wash once to remove the oils and sweat that have accumulated over the past few days.

Tips: Unlike washing your natural hair, avoid scrubbing the roots or digging your fingers deep into the hair, as this may loosen the hair wig.

Rinse gently, again allowing the water to run down the back of your neck. Use your fingers to ensure all the shampoo is rinsed out.

After your shower, gently pat your hair dry. Check the bond to see if it remains secure or if it has started to loosen. The adhesive may appear white while wet, but it will turn clear again once your hair is dry. If needed, you can reapply glue to ensure it stays secure before going out.

Spray your hair with a special leave-in conditioner designed for wigs. This spray is lighter than cream, which can weigh the hair down. Then, starting from the sides and working towards the bond, detangle the hair wig with a brush from the ends to the roots. Re-clip or re-glue any areas of the lace wig that have come loose. Finally, use a wide-tooth comb to add volume to the wig and blow-dry it to style.
